Waiting for Peace

For many of the holy times we celebrate there are times beforehand that are for preparation, reflection, as well as for hope and healing. The season before Christmas is called Advent. This is a time during which Christians prepare to celebrate for the birth of Jesus.

During this time, many homes and most churches light the four candles (three pink, one purple) of an advent wreath. As each of the four weeks before Christmas begin, a new candle is lit. The light of the advent wreath reminds Christians that Jesus is the "Light of the World." Not coincidentally, the first candle lit symbolizes hope.

With Hope, we can move forward through dark times. With Hope, we have the strength to carry on, even in the face of great pain and suffering.

The following week, the candle that symbolizes Faith is lit. When we have Hope, our Faith in something bigger than ourselves grows.

Joy is the symbol of the third candle. Joy comes when we have Hope and Faith that good will triumph. Joy helps to grow our Hope and Faith for the future.

The last candle is often called the Angels' Candle. This candle symbolizes Peace.  Peace comes quietly and softly when we have Hope, Faith and Joy. Peace slips into our lives without us even realizing it is there.

Regardless of whether you are Christian or not, I believe the symbolism of the Advent Wreath can be wisdom for all traveling through dark times. Regardless of who you are or what faith path you are on, there will be times of Advent in your life. When these times come, why not light a candle, read a poem, or sing a song in preparation for the future. Why not remember that hope builds faith, which brings joy, which opens the door for peace to enter our lives.

May we all find ways to travel the dark times of winter as well as of life. May the spark of Hope ignite our Faith in brighter tomorrows. May we feed this fire with Joy. And, may Peace enter our lives, wrapping around us and those we love.

Blessings to all!
