Mothering the World

Image
Love by Kathleen Grieg Mothering can take many forms. Each of us - male or female - can mother.  How can this be, you may ask?   Let's look at the verb form of the word - to mother. The late Old English meaning was, "that which has given birth to anything ."  Then, around 1863, it began to be used to mean, "to take care of, to act as a mother." During this pandemic, we have all been challenged to "act as a mother," to each other and to ourselves.  These actions are what a mother would do for her child - protect, nurture, encourage. We have been asked to protect each other from this virus. This means wearing masks, as well as making them for those who do not have any. Protection also means staying several feet away from people, staying home and keeping everything sanitized. Nurturing comes from our creative acts. For example, the ingenious posts we share on social media - group sing-a-longs, videos of social distance dancing, challenges t...

Connections

Image
Entwined - photo by L.M.Neas Scientist recently released a study that said that trees communicate with each other through their root systems . One tree becomes linked to all the other trees in the forest by means of soil fungi and neighboring plants. This got me to thinking... The grandmother trees in the forests of our world are connected one to the other across acres and acres of land. We humans are also connected one to the other through thousands of millions of DNA strands.  Just as a tree has one core but many branches fed by many roots, we humans have a common essence but our branches and the roots that feed us are many. This idea fueled my thoughts further... Mother's Day is difficult for many people for various reasons. Some people have had no relationship with their mother, others have had painful and abusive relationships. For those people, I offer this. Think about the people, female or male, that nurtured you. Many children had a Dad who supported...

Creating a Wave of Change

Image
In Memory of Anne Marie Kasper Neas - who taught me to believe.  On April 21st of this year, I launched a campaign to create a Wave of Change to bring the girls from Nigeria home.  The idea came as a way to honor my Mother. April 21st is her birthday and the event ended on Mother's Day.  People from around the world joined me in prayer, mediation, positive energy and a variety of other means for connecting to Spirit.   Recently, someone ask what difference did all that effort make.  This person wasn't the only skeptic or critic.  I was also asked, "What if at the end of the event, the girls are still not found?" My answers is and always has been, "Yes, it makes a difference! and We will keep praying." Faith, Hope and Love are what motivated the Wave of Change Campaign.  From the moment that I first presented the idea to spend 9 days envisioning the girls of Nigeria safe and with their loved ones again, that Wave went from a tiny ripp...

At Momma's Knee

Image
As an adult, I have come to realize how amazing my mother was.  A woman way ahead of her time, she fought against discrimination of all types. She promoted acceptance and loving-kindness long before it was the fashion.  She taught be to open my eyes by way of my heart and really see a situation.  She gave me the gifts of music, art, poetry and literature when I was very, very young, teaching me to cherish them, always. On Sunday, as people around the country celebrate Mother's Day, I will be honoring my mother with the completion of the Wave of Change to Bring the Girls Home event.  I have dedicated this event to her memory, knowing that all the love that went into the past nine days began when I was just a child standing at my mothers knee. I pray that the young girls of Nigeria, as well as all the women and children that have been kidnapped, find strength in what they have learned at their mother's knee.  May they all return home soon and may the pai...

Mothers Day Prayer

Image via Wikipedia “A mother is the truest friend we have, when trials, heavy and sudden, fall upon us; when adversity takes the place of prosperity; when friends who rejoice with us in our sunshine, desert us when troubles thicken around us, still will she cling to us, and endeavor by her kind precepts and counsels to dissipate the clouds of darkness, and cause peace to return to our hearts”. --Washington Irving God our Creator, we pray: for new mothers, coming to terms with new responsibility; for expectant mothers, wondering and waiting; for those who are tired, stressed or depressed; for those who struggle to balance the tasks of work and family; for those who are unable to feed their children due to poverty; for those whose children have physical, mental or emotional disabilities; for those who have children they do not want; for those who raise children on their own; for those who have lost a child; for those who care for the children of others; ...
