Speaking of Spirit

When I saw the quote, "The problem is, everyone is looking for unconditional Love, carrying a bag full of conditions," I gasped. Wow! the truth of that statement wasn't lost on me. From the moment we draw our first breath, we are looking to be loved, to be cherished, to be respected and protected. Some would argue that this is etched into our DNA so deeply that infants who don't find this waiting for them fail to thrive.  Unfortunately, in this imperfect existence, love has been twisted and mangled to the point of almost being unrecognizable. Love is an action we not only associate with people but things. Let's face it, we need a new word for loving things; otherwise, how will we ever grasp the enormity and sanctity of unconditional Love?  "I love my car," is not the same as, "I love you," yet the words we use are identical.  Furthermore, when we add to this humanity's incessant need to control and conditionalize, and you have the unfortuna...

Several years ago, as I was cuddling my newest granddaughter, who had yet to be named, I had a revelation. Looking into her little face, not knowing her name, I knew without any doubt that my heart was full of love for her.  This realization, that I could love her no matter what, gave me cause to ponder. If I, a mere mortal, can feel that way, can you imagine the breadth and depth of the Creator’s Love for us?  Think about it...the Source of All Loves us no matter what we are called; whether Mary, John, Kinjal, Xiaolin, Eyes that Shine, Malidoma, or Nasser. The Great “I Am” Loves us no matter what we look like; whether big or small, black, white, pink, tan, yellow or red. The Great Spirit Loves us no matter what we do; whether we are a president of a country, a pauper in the street, a farm hand or a skilled worker. God Loves us no matter how we behave; whether we follow the Path mindfully or constantly wander off into the briars. The Creator Love us...period. Th...

When I began Speaking of Spirit several years ago, my intent was to offer those who read it something to sustain them through the week ahead.  I can only hope that the pebble I dropped into that pool has rippled far.   So, I find myself in the first full week of July.  Summer is here with all its sun, flowering plants, newly birthed babies and free time.  These glorious days a great time to find a quiet spot near some body of water or lush garden to look inward. This summer, I have already had moments of meditation in the garden as well as by the water's edge.  I have counted my blessings, which are as numerous as the stars.  I have sought forgiveness and forgave.  I have opened to the Universal Love that is there for all of us.   May all who read these words be blessed with Love, Light and Laughter.  May your summer days be filled with the sunshine of hope, the gentle breeze of faith and the rich fruits of unconditional lo...

The word "love" is bandied about these days. I think few people really stop to think about what the word, in all its incarnations really means.   If we look at what Webster's Dictionary has to say, we will find more definitions in both noun and verb form than we can imagine! The Love that I want to talk about today is the unconditonal kind that sees into the soul of a person and honors, celebrates and cherishes that person regardless of any of the boxes that they may or may not fit into at any given time.  Unconditional Love means work; it means mindful thinking; it means see past what makes us uncomfortable.  Unconditional Love means that we willingly move past our comfort zones into that place where possibility lives...where we just might find a friend for a lifetime...where, instead of "the other," we find "us." Before I write anything, I would like you to watch a couple of videos... So my question is  this - Is Nature trying to teach us something? Creatures that should not have any desire to connect to each other have found a way to not simply coexist, (which if you study nature at all, is not really that unusual) but be friends - enjoy each others company and protect each other from harm. Why are we suddenly seeing all this unusual, unbelievable interactions? I believe that humankind is being sent a very important, very necessary message from the Creator.  The message is not new, in fact, it can be found in every faith path in existence.  But, we just aren't hearing the meaning, even when we say the words over and over. What better way to teach than by example. Therefore, Nature has sent us examples, and most recently, many of them!  Unique and unheard of bondings by creatures diametrically opposed to each other.
