Those No Longer with Us

This Thursday, people across the US will sit down with family and friends to celebrate the holiday we have come to know as Thanksgiving. Besides all the preparation going into cooking, many families enjoy the day by watching the traditional Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade on TV, while others might bundle up for a rousing game of football played at the local high school. Still others might be enjoying the pro ball found on cable.

Thing is, this is the Norman Rockwell version of Thanksgiving. While I really enjoy Rockwell's work, I believe he did us no favors in portraying this day as completely blissful. For many, it is far from the idyllic scene he painted.

So, as those of us who will enjoy the day with family and friends sit before the bounty on our tables, let us think of those who will not be celebrating with us. Whether through death or distance, hold those whose chairs stay empty on Thursday in your thoughts and prayers and remember that for those who miss them, this is a difficult and sad day.

Let us also think about those who must work to keep us safe - the military and the first responders (fire, police, ambulance) - they may be far from home on Thursday or be called out at a moment's notice.

While I am not trying to rain on everyone's Day of Thanks, I do hope to bring awareness of how the holidays (from now until after February 14) are not merry and bright for everyone. Be more patient with folks...they may be hurting inside so bad they can't express their pain. Be kinder to everyone you meet...kindness goes a long way to helping those in despair make it through another day. Most importantly, tell those you love that you appreciate and love them, for none of us know when our last day together might be.

Blessings to all, near and far, who will celebrate the day. May every day be a Day of Thanks. With much gratitude to you all!  Blessings!
